English Camp, Washington, United States

4.5 (456 reviews) Spent Ranking #6 in San Juan Islands Points of Interest & Landmarks

Worth checking out

My husband and I dropped by the English Camp not knowing what we would find. First we took a wonderful hike up the historic Young Hill which provided beautiful views of San Juan Island and the waters surrounding it. Then we walked the grounds of the camp and eventually made our way into the visitors center where one of the park historians sang a song he had created to explain the Pig War. He showed us pictures of the maple tree that stands majestically in the center of the camp - it is currently 300 years old and was a mere 100 years old when the camp was built. Needless to say, we really enjoyed our visit.

    Makes the imagination soar
English Camp is the actual camp where the British army lived before the US, Canada, and England figured out where the national borders were. While it now has a fraction of the total number of buildings that used to be located there, there are enough left to make your imagination soar in wondering what life was like there. Knowing in how many other areas the English army was engaged in battles and conquest, the inhabitants of this camp had it made! Fresh water. Beautiful vistas. Space for English gardens. Friendly relations with the Americans that surrounded them. A fascinating piece of restored history.

    Capturing a period of history...
As part of a day hike, we stopped & explored English Camp. The historical park has informative signage and a number of the original buildings still stand. A beautiful totem pole pays tribute to the indigenous people who called this area home. The English garden was pleasant to stroll through and the surrounding madrone trees, pear trees and majestic oaks added to the beauty.
