Train Trip Back In Time

The Dayton Historic Depot is the oldest standing depot in Washington state. Built in 1881, it was moved to its present location in 1899 by capstan and horses. After it closed in 1971, the Dayton Historical Depot Society placed the Depot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, then they refurbished the building and opened as a museum in 1981. Presently, the first floor of the depot has been re-created to appear as it did in 1899. The upstairs, where the Station Agent and his family lived, contains a Gallery that has rotating exhibits. The freight room houses a gift shop of Depot memorabilia, western history books, low technology games, and unique gifts for that special hostess or friend.

    Quick Stop
Much fun. The stairs just about killed us both, no wonder people used to be so skinny. The attendant let us in a bit before opening because it had turned cold. She was very nice and informative. You don’t have to go upstairs, but that is where all the cool old dolls are. I recommend stopping by.

    Well Maintained Museum
The Dayton Historic Depot is a nice small town museum. They have self guided tour brochures that guide you through the two story museum. This was the station used in the early days of Dayton and you can walk through the waiting room, ticket sales office, station agent living quarters, and freight weighing area. This doubles as a museum for what life was like in Dayton at the time. Everything is well cared for here and you can get a close look at everything they have on display. This is worth a visit if you are passing through the area. I wouldn't make a large detour to visit, but certainly worth a stop.
