Columbia Hills State Park, Washington, United States

4.5 (61 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Dallesport State Parks • Historic Walking Areas

Superb petroglyphs.

Horsethief Lake attracts fishing and camping enthusiasts primarily, but anyone interested in beautiful scenery will enjoy the park and nearby Celilo Falls just as much.

    Spectacular wildflowers
We came here for the spring wildflower show of arrowleaf balsamroot and were not disappointed. We did three hikes: Horsethief Butte, Crawford Oaks, and Dalles Mountain Ranch. All awesome. Very exposed so bring sunscreen and good brimmed hats for sure.

    Gorgeous setting hot and windy
Several state owned properties were combined to create Columbia Hills park, and because of this and great historical and recreational things to do it is a large park with different entrances going to different things. We camped at Horsethief Lake In a platform tent provided by the park. Pros: structure provided a windbreake so you could sit on front porch comfortably, there was reasonable space/privacy and some shade. Cons: the tent is poorly ventilated and holds heat to an uncomfortable degree at night. Patches of cloth have been stapled here and there, which flap quite vigorously and loudly in the wind. Had it rained, we would have had multiple leaks. Still we thought the tent provided benefits our small tent did not. Recommend reserving a spot on friday/Saturday petroglyph tour....fantastic historical site and great commentary. This is separate from another petroglyph area which has rocks on display next to parking lot. For hiking in the park, recommend Horsethief Butte for jaw dropping views of gorge..fairly easy trail around base of Butte, can do in an hour. Also hiked upper loop of Crawford ranch for excellent spring floral display and wide open views including mt hood. Much to do in the park, outside park there are wineries to visit and a great museum in nearby Dalles (discovery museum). All photos taken in park boundaries.
