Take the Wild Goose Trail to Artist Point from Heather Meadows Visitor Center if final stretch of road is closed
Yes, when we wanted to visit on Thursday, 8/12, the final 1.8 miles of the road to Artist Point was closed. HOWEVER, you can park at the Heather Meadows Visitor Center and take the Wild Goose Trail to Artist Point which is what we did. This trail is 1.8 miles roundtrip and the views going up were great. It really wasn't that difficult and provided a way to Artist Point. There are some wooden stairs you have to go up but nothing too bad. It was actually pretty crowded when we did this at 8 am on 8/12. There were plenty of people doing this trail.

Absolutely Stunning
The hike from Bagley Lake, going on to the Chain Lakes and Artist Point, is probably the most stunning hike I've ever taken. It is long, though-- we saw people starting at the Chain Lakes, which we probably do next time. The water is this gorgeous, gorgeous, Lake Tahoe blue. You go through glacial meadows, rocky, almost desert- like areas, woodsy trails, and amazing views of the mountains. Wild blueberries stud the trail most of the way through. Fantastic.
