Orval Abbey, Wallonia, Belgium

4.5 (386 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in The Ardennes Ancient Ruins

Worth a vist!

One of our highlights during our trip to Belgium. Didn't really know what to expect but spent many happy hours discovering the museum area & then enjoying lunch and an Orval Vert at the restaurant close by. In terms of the entrance fee, it is by far the best value for money destination we visited.

    Go to the source
I love Orval beer and visited the abbey many times as solo or with friends as well. It is always a pleasant way to kill some time, like an hour and a half. Afterwards, in the vicinity, you can get some crispy or old beers. In the abbey you can learn on brewing process and history as well. The scene is nice and not too stuffed with tons of information but also you get the basics you need. To visit the new monastery there are only 2 possibilities in each year I think, and the brewery itself also. So what you can see are the ruins of the old monastery and some gardens, exhibition rooms etc... Once I'll sign up for the visit of the operating part.

A place where you can find peace and serenity
This abbey is hidden in the deep south part of Belgium and contains the most ancient gothic building of Belgium. It's a magic place where you can feel the peace and the serenity of an ancient place where still rush of modern life is not arrived yet. You can visit the shop and the museum from 10.30-17.30 in winter and from 9.30-18.30 in summer but ticketoffice close one hour earlier. In the open air museum you can visit the ruins of the ancient abbey that was started to build in 12th century. Everything is explained very well in three languages. There are also two museums: one related to the history of the abbey with archeological objects and another one related to the brewery and the cheese factory and their processes. In the shop you can buy beer, cheese and gadgets related also to the abbey. In the last week I visited 5 of 7 trappist breweries sites (not been in Achel and La Trappe) and this is definitely the best one to visit as a tourist.
