Striking old-new Mosque in Kazan

The Kul Sharif Mosque is one of the most prominent sights in Kazan with an interesting history behind it. It's turquoise blue dome and minarets stand out on the city's panorama. The original Mosque on this place dates back to early 16c. However it was demolished to ground when Ivan the Terrible attacked Kazan. It's named after Imam Kul Sharif, who died defending the city with his scholars during Ivan's invasion. The present Mosque was finished in 2005, at the time of millennium celebrations of Kazan foundation. It's a symbol of multiethnic Tatarstan standing few hundred meters from the Annunciation Cathedral. Visiting the Mosque is free, and the interiors are also very nice. The ground floor is for men, while female pray on the second floor. Do climb the third floor terrace from where you can admire the entire interior with its lotus like ceiling. In the basement is a small Islamic museum with a small entry fee.

    Beautiful both inside and out
Probably the most famous and easily recognisable building in Kazan. This Mosque is beautiful both inside and out. Entry is free, it’s well worth climbing the stairs to the two balconies as these offer great views of the mosque. There is also a small museum in the basement.

One of the most beautiful and elegant mosques I've ever seen (and I saw a lot!)
Built by the Turks, financed by Saudi Arabia, UAE and Iran (well, by the Russian government also, of course!), adorned with calligraphy by the Iraqis. A global Muslim project :)) Me and my wife visited this architectural piece of art in Mid-June. Stepping in, we stopped awestruck. From the inside it looks even lighter and more sophisticated than from the outside. Big windows, rib vaults, intricate arabesques, carpets... Though Islam in Tatarstan is not very strict, still visitors must be dressed appropriately. Men and women are not obliged to walk separately, however. Climb the balcony. The view therefrom is well worth the efforts taken. Strongly recommended!
