Fascinating museum with palace ruins, historical rooms and history of Lithuania.

Fascinating museum which gives a really good history of Lithuania. The information on the reconstruction of the Grand Dukes Palace itself is also very interesting. The exhibits are well laid out. The museum is clean and well lit. We did tours 1,2 and 3. It's worth deciding in advance what you most want to see if you have limited time, we spent around four hours in the museum to read and look at all of the exhibits, but you could spend longer! Tour I covered the ruins of the original palace, archaeological exhibits and history of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and was our favourite. There was plenty of information to read alongside the exhibits, presented in English and Lithuanian. Audio guides were also available. Tour II covered the reconstructed historical rooms. Tour III was exhibits of armour and information on music and daily life. The sixth floor observation tower is worth a visit.

Must go if you want to know more about Lithuania and its history
The museum exceeded my expectations. It is very big and you can choose different routes based on your intetests. We did all four and it took around five hours. If you are short on time, I recommend taking only route one. That gives you an introduction about Lithuaniab history. Recommend taking the audioguide and also reading texts on the walls to get most of your visit. Second route is about rooms in palace. Interiors are not so opulent as in famous European palaces but interesting enough. Third route is not so good as first and second and I hope that it will be developed and more exibhits and info texts are added in the future. Exhibitions in route four are changing constantly. Your ticket is valid for full day so you can take a lunch break and come back later.

    Unwelcoming and confusing
This museum could be so much better The entrance fee is confusing with different sections all individually priced or a all section fee . Just charge one fee . The 1 Euro extra hand held audio guide is difficult to use and who on earth thought it would be a good idea to enlist an English narrator with a strong Yorkshire accent more suited to a Tetley tea advert. The virtual reality goggles well into the museum need a two euro token that is purchased back at reception . No mention of this when buying your entrance ticket ! The vast number of abrupt unfriendly staff constantly following you need customer service training or sending back to the KGB . Though the many interesting exhibits are sited in a beautiful building newly created as a copy of the destroyed palace it lacks character as it is so flawless. We also found it uncomfortably hot in the maze of rooms and flooring levels even after being ordered by the cloakroom guard to put our coats into a locker . All things considered it was not really worth the 18 Euros for entry and extras for the two of us due to the various issues mentioned which did not make the visit enjoyable.
