The castle is nice to see, but the park is breathtaking

You would go to this place to visit the restored medieval castle. When you go up in the tower, you will have an absolutely beautiful spectacular view of the forests surrounding. For me, the trees are the must see of this place, especially the oaks. There is a breathtaking park with beautiful trees and hills and some sculpture that make it even more a unique experience. Take the time to sit on a bench just to listen to the wind in the leaves.

Nice mix of castle and infrastructure buildings - Check out the House of Peasants
We went to this place expecting a decent castle ruine and some details around it, but it was quit a bit more. The whole reserve is a fairly big park area containing the castle and it's nicely presented exhibitions, some stunning views, some sculptures and a whole set of supporting buildings to the castle with their exhibitions. All of this is well maintained and the exhibitions and information signs are state of the art presentations in Latuvian, English, Russian and German. Topping the allready nice experience is the newly (May 2019) opened "House of Peasants" on the oposite end to the castle on the compound. The exhibition inside explains how Latvia became a country and founded. This is done with interactive displays, videos, artifacts and other state of the art visual presentation techniques. Even the somewhat chaotic founding story of Latvia becomes understandable by it. Well worth to spent there some time and the small additional fee! I fully recommend this place and can not stress enough to pay the "House of Peasants" a visit.
