Great for Kids 5 to 13
I've been a number of times over the past probably 30 or so years, it hasn't changed much. Best suited to kids aged between 5 and about 13. My most recent visit was with a 12, 6 and 2 year old. The new toddler areas was great for the 2 year old the rest was better suited to the older 2. Free GA entry for kids and $15 for Adults (this excludes the planetarium, Lightning Show and whatever special exhibit is on at the time, they cost about $10 each additionally) its a cheap day out. But even without those options there is still lots to do, we spent 3.5 hours exploring at a slow toddler friendly pace. The pumping station area is worth checking out too, I know its often overlooked. It is busy during school holidays but I found arriving at 9am you have the place mostly to yourself for the first hour or 2 anyway. But it does get very busy by midday. My only grip is it hasn't changed much (aside from the toddler area), its probably due for an overall refresh. Also in the past the "special exhibits" have generally been a let down, so I don't always bother to pay the extra for that.

    Busy
Admittedly we visited during the school holidays so the museum was packed full of children and their parents. We got in for free as [overseas and domestic] students get free admission which was great! This place is a fair distance out of the city centre and we had to get the train from Southern Cross station to Spotswood and walk to reach Scienceworks. The activities and exhibitions were actually very good and there was lots of interactable exhibits which kept everyone interested. At the same time it still remained educational meaning people were learning and having fun. We didn't do any of the paid exhibitions so I can't comment on that, but in total we spent about 2 hours there before we had seen and done mostly everything. I would definitely recommend this place to families with young children, but for adult visitors to Melbourne I would say it is probably not worth the time and money in travelling, unless of course you really love science!
