Canal Grande, Veneto, Italy

4.5 (41.6k reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #1 in Veneto Bodies of Water

One off the bucket list.

Venice's main water thoroughfare, lined with great Renaissance palaces, is a colorful and busy spectacle of gondolas and vaporetti.

    Heart of Venice
Venice has nice buildings, some quaint, some historic, but really it’s the canals that make Venice so unique. Nothing sums this city better than the Grand Canal. Walk up and down it, eat at a restaurant by it, travel on it on a boat, or if you have money to burn, do a gondola ride. If you do decide to do it, make sure to do it near sunset - 30 min before. It will cost 100 euros (20 more than the usual 80) for a 30 min ride but the extra 20 is well worth it for the amazing lighting for photos and less traffic. It’s an expensive ride, but since you’re only going to do it once in your life, might as well experience it!

    Bellissimo Grand Canal
This is the most magical part of Venice, and taking a private water taxi from the airport is a great way to see it and a beautiful introduction to the city. It looks even better than in films/photos, bustling but not crammed with boats. We also took a vaporetto up and down a few times, which is a budget way to soak it all in.
