Well-Preserved Medieval Fortress!
Dating to the 12th century, this strategic fortress is one of two highly fortified hills (Trapezitza being the other) that protected Bulgarian rulers living on the site in the tsar’s palace.

A must see
This is the top attraction of Veliko Tărnovo. And my third time visiting, this time with small children. It could take a good 2-3 hours to see and read everything, but was worth it. The view from the church is amazing. If you manage to watch the spectacular Sound and Light, you will see this fortress in a completely different way. Kids loved it and we did a nice climbing and walking around. The entrance fee was 15 leva for a family ticket of 2 adults and 2 children

Quiet, beautiful views and a peaceful experience
Early January 2021, COVID times, I visited. You buy a ticket for 10 LB from a small shop almost adjacent (but other side of the road, cannot miss it) to the brick road leading to the fortress. Almost no people when I was there, but snow instead. It's nice to walk around the area, the views from there on Veliko and the surroundings are stunning. The church on top is in my view more beautifil from the out- than from the inside, but that's a matter of taste. I'd like to burn a candle in churches too, but this was not possible, maybe because of the low number of people coming there in these times. The info on the signs is mostly in Bulgarian and German, not in English, this would've been nice. There was an audio presentation going on when I arrived at the base of the church (the spot where the wooden benches are). Could not find the button where I could play it again, though. All in all, a nice stroll, beautiful views and I got an encounter with three mountain goats as well. Nice and peaceful.
