Worth a visit
It was to hot to give this area a visit in the summer but having visited at New Year we were able to fully appreciate the old town. Stunning views and very old Spanish houses to admire. Only 5 minutes from the city centre. Would recommend.

A delightful surprise
The guy in Alicante's Tourist Office recommended a visit to this attractive part of the old city of Alicante and it is certainly well worth a visit. It's picture postcard pretty with lots of little old houses in steep, narrow streets nestled together in the shadow of the city's Castillo de Santa Barbara. The whitewashed houses contrast with their colourful displays of potted flowers and plants and brightly painted window and door frames. In the highest part you'll find the Ermita de Santa Cruz church and a fantastic view of the city. Santa Cruz is a short but steepish walk from the historic part of the city. A photographer's dream and we were told that, unsurprisingly, lots of artists choose to live here.

Colourful
Descend from the Castle on the outer rampart which takes you down to the Barrio. The steps are quite steep in places so be prepared. When you reach the bottom turn left up a short hill into the Barrio. This old part of Alicante is worth seeing from this perspective. Walk and be amazed at the white small houses decorated in blue with flowers and flower pots adorning the streets. The narrow streets are home to families and a place where children still play. Stop at one of the restaurants on the way and enjoy lunch or a drink or both at very reasonable prices.
