Great traditional route for the summer
I've only done a part of this route and I hadn't even realised that it was officially recognised. We were fortunate to have good weather for a couple of days last June so drove along to Ruotsinpyhtää and Ahvenkoski. I've passed over the bridges so many times in the coach from Helsinki but this time we actually stopped and looked around. It's man-made, obviously, and usually I prefer nature, but the bridges and the power station are a magnificent sight. There's a café/kiosk on the main-road bridge to get some light refreshments. Inland, along the river, we got some fantastic fish to take home from the old traditional shop that has been trading for many years. We had a plate of the absolutely finest fish there too - they even had gluten free bread for me! One oddity is the ancient village of Ruotsinkylä (Swedish Village). There's a shop there that is still part of the old Coop movement of Finland. In addition, there's a lively working café/bar and garage that's been restored to its 1960s glory. We didn't go to the Ironworks this time as we had gone a couple of years ago, but these are a fantastic attraction on this scenic route. Another part of the route is the town of Loviisa where the journey starts. Again we had been there on this trip without knowing that it was a part of this official tour. I love Loviisa with its old houses and restored buildings and neighbourhoods. And that's not to mention the several excellent restaurants, none of which, unfortunately, we visited this time! The "Western Cultural Route" incorporates for a short distance part of the King's Road, also listed on Trip Advisor. I am returning to the area in July. I shall be asking my friends if we can explore this route further.
