Vanha Kauppahalli (aka Old Market Hall)

The Vanha Kauppahalli, or Old Market Hall, is a relaxed, indoor, retail and dining spot and event space and is an ideal lunch spot for the hungry tourist and locals alike. Eating salmon soup or Skagan shrimp (shrimp toast) at the Hall is a must. We loved the food and the easy, friendly atmosphere. You can also browse local delicacies and buy jam, preserves, fish, meat and other Finnish fare to take home as a memento of your trip. The Hall is close to the outdoor market where you can browse further stalls. The building is gorgeous and a lovely photo op too. Watch out for the seagulls!

    An interesting market hall
It is worth walking round the stalls in the Market Hall in Helsinki. There are stalls selling cheese, meat, coffee shops and restaurants. You can try reindeer meat for 8 Euros. You can even buy reindeer chips. We had creamy soup if Salmon here at a restaurant called Story. It cost 13.80 Euros and was really watery and rather tasteless.

    A very Finnish institution
Helsinki has a few of these market halls (kauppahalli) but this is my favourite (mostly because it's the closest to my flat!). Very quaint on the interior, with a very diverse combination of shops, including one of the best Helsinki butchers, the best fishmongers, and a range of delicatessens, cafes and restaurants. It does tend to get thronged with tourists which can be a little maddening when you are a local actually trying to do your grocery shopping here, but that's all part of the charm.
