    A city Highlight
The station building was designed by Eliel Saarinen and inaugurated in 1919, and is often mentioned as one of the worlds most striking railway stations. The station is mostly clad in Finnish granite, and its distinguishing features are its tall clock tower and the two pairs of statues holding the spherical lamps, lit at night-time, on either side of the main entrance. These statues are considered local treasures and are often adorned with such things as the national football shirt and even covid masks. The former ticket hall has been converted into an Italian restaurant but is till worth a look.

    Big and Bold
We arrived at the station on one of the last trains of the day from the airport, they switched all the lights off after we exited the train and we walked up a shadowy, deserted platform, so didn't get a chance to experience the scale of the building or the photogenic architecture. Visiting in daylight once we had settled in the city, we were struck by the imposing entrance - the four statues straddling the main entrance were all wearing masks as a nod to the current Covid-19 pandemic - and the beautiful architecture inside. Do take the opportunity to wander in and go out onto the platforms to get photos of the canopy and the tracks. It was one of the few places in Helsinki that we encountered people begging, always a sad thing, but when we visited it was rather quiet and we enjoyed walking around. Don't slip in expecting to be able to pop to the loo, you'll need a Euro to get in and they are rather basic. Not a tourist 'destination' by any means but worth a visit if you are a photographer or just passing.
