A lovely old church
What a lovely old church. There was a helpful guide at the church and we chatted about the lovely setting. The old fireplaces are just great and I'm glad they have not removed them. I was surprised to learn that the altar piece was by Helene Schjerfbeck.

Important centric church
The church was built in 1770-1 as Sweden and Russian border divided area into original Pyhtää (russian side) and new Ruotsinpyhtää, literally SwedenPyhtää. It is important example of centric church architecture, in octagon shape. Wooden church was originally black, because outside was varnished with tar, giving seldomly used church color. Current color with new windows was introduce 1898. Summary: Ruotsinpyhtää Ruukki area and church is worth detour.

Worth a detour
This is an interesting church both for the architecture and for the altarpiece by Helene Schjerfbeck, who went on to become one of Finland's foremost painters. Don't miss the graves of heroes from the War.
