Hidden Gem for Commodore Fans in Tuskegee
The recently opened Commodore Museum in Tuskegee doesn't look like much on the outside, but as your Mom would say, "don't judge a book by its cover." The museum is the former recording studio of the Commodores with all of their recording and stage equipment intact. The owner/curator is a former bodyguard of the band and provides a fascinating walking tour of the museum. "Brick House" and other unforgettable Commodore hits were recorded right here. Interestingly, Kenny Rogers recorded "Lady" here as well, and there is a great video of Kenny and Lionel Richie singing the song which you can tell was recorded on the very spot you're watching the video! The museum also houses numerous Commodore memorabilia including a colorful array of costumes. If you're in the area, don't miss this place!!

A blast from the past tribute to the Commodores
The Commodores Museum is a blast from the past with plenty of memories in photos posted on the wall. Johnny Bailey tells the stories of the good old days before Lionel Richie went SOLO. We spent 3 hrs on Sat chatting about the southern tours in Charlotte Greensboro and Columbia among the few. The Studio was used for several yrs before they went defunct in 81. The old payphone is mounted on the wall in the office with the 334# still posted. The sound and audio rooms are still intact in the rear on both sides of the stage along with the pit area where business decisions were hashed out and decided amongst the group. There is a gift office with a lot of the old albums CDs, 8 Tracks and cassettes still in the wrappers. The mock Stage room up front is a marvelous set to look at when the lights are turned on. Mr Bailey runs the business solo and has been having some health issues so he is open by appointment only. Please call ahead before visiting and he will get back with you within a day or so.

Very Disappointed
Hubby and I researched things to do in Tuskegee before heading out to visit the Commodores Museum and were very much looking forward to seeing it. We were sorely disappointed to pull into the parking lot to find a locked door and curtained windows during normal business hours, with no explanation or contact information. A gentleman happened to be leaving the business next door, so we inquired whether he knew when the museum might be open. He replied that it was hit and miss and told us that the owner showed up pretty much when he felt like it. He said we might phone to make an appointment. No one answered the phone. I would have absolutely loved to see where Lionel Richie got his start. I'm so disappointed that it was impossible to do so.
