Palazzo Blu, Tuscany, Italy

4.5 (756 reviews) Thursday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent Ranking #12 in Province of Pisa Speciality Museums

Worth a visit

Situated along the river Arno, amongst other spectacular buildings of Pisa. I spent a good two hours walking round the museum. Looking at art throughout the years to venturing in to the unique rooms, and looking at the classic furniture and the unique architecture.

    A little gem in Pisa
Go to the Arno River and look for blue palazzo on the south side. If it weren't so obvious,it could be called a "hidden gem." During our visit in mid-April there were two outstanding exhibits: one of the late Renaissance painter Artemisia Gentilischi; the other of costumes by Anna Anni, long-time collaborator of Franco Zeffirelli. If they are still on when you are in Pisa, read up a bit on Gentilischi before you go. Her incredible "Judith Slaying Holofernes" is in the Uffizzi in Florence, but the Palazzo Blu has collected one of the most outstanding group of her other paintings for this exhibit. The costumes of Anna Anni from operas (Otello) and plays (Maria Stuarta) are exquisite. The accompanying video (with English subtitles) helps give a sense of the creative process. Be forewarned that Palazzo Blu has very little translated into English. But it is well worth the effort of any art-lover. Bonus: it's free!

    I Macchiaioli exhibition.
Early Italian impressionist painters. A great exhibition of artists not well known outside of Italy. Scenes and interiors enhanced by the beautiful Italian light. Very well curated in this museum. Until 26th February.
