Dome Climb
We pre booked our tickets on line and joined the queue for the climb on the North Side of the Duomo. The climb itself was done in sections with a couple of stopping places, the view of the inside of the dome from the balcony isn’t as good as from the ground looking up as you can get right under the centre of the dome from the ground but on the balcony you can see the detail closer. Outside you get a lovely panoramic view of the city and we manged to time our visit to coincide with a beautiful sun set. It’s a must when in Florence.

Only "underneath" Roman Ruins worth a ticket...but....
If you see a crazy long line-up to Duomo, it is the FREE line, where you can only view the main floor of the cathedral. If you want to see the roman ruins underneath or climb the tower, you pay 10E (which I felt was worth it). The cathedral itself... i've seen far more interesting ones. When you pay the 10E, the line-up is very short. The entrance is directly beside the entrance to the tall tower. (the "free" folks are entering from the main doors) The view of this building from outside is astounding.... and often helped me figure out where the heck I was when I saw it peeking between buildings. The Duomo area is a good spot to view as 'the center" of town and would be ideal for a hotel spot too, but everything immediately surrounding it (restaurants etc) is inflated in price.
