Goodbye Gilcrease Museum
This place is temporarily closed. The City of Tulsa prepares to demolish the current structure and begin construction of a new museum on the same site five minutes from downtown. The current museum structure – a collection of several aging buildings pieced together over many decades – is scheduled to be demolished later this year. Construction of a new structure that can better protect the $2 billion collection and deliver a 21st century visitor experience to Gilcrease visitors will begin in early 2022 and is expected to take 2-3 years. The world's largest collection of art from the American West is housed at this museum, which is also well stocked with Native American artifacts and artwork. Thematic gardens reflect the gardening styles of different time periods.

Explore the Gardens
I loved the Gilcrease Museum not just for all the art inside but for the tranquil gardens outdoors. After a stressful year, seeing turtles piled up sunning themselves on logs reminded me that life is continuing. If you visit, be sure to take time to explore the ponds in the park behind the museum.

Visited for the Trails Below the Museum
We didn't have time to take a tour of the museum, but very much enjoyed the trails down below it. The is a pond with turtles and several sculptures placed around the park. We did find the gift shop to be much nicer than most museum gift shops.
