Tripoli's Jamahiriya Museum, Tripoli District, Libya

4.5 (17 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Tripoli Speciality Museums

Cool, Clear and collected

This museum set in a castle in the centre of the city is a must-visit site. Starting in date order with the 6000BC, artifacts, cave paintings and rock carvings, it progresses through Punic, Greek and Roman stautes and articles collected from sits arround Libya but mostly from Leptis and Sabratha. The museum is well laid out and can take a whole morning to explore. The top floor, which is visited less frequently, deals with the Berber and Arab heritage and a few Ghaddafi trophies but is still worth a visit.

Don't leave Tripoli without a visit
This is definitely a highlight of any visit to the capital city. It's arguable whether you should go before you visit Leptis, Sabratha, etc or afterwards, but I'd go afterwards if possible. So much of the statuary and mosaics of these sites are in the museum, it is good to see them when you can put them in context after a site visit. The museum is closed on a Friday, as are most attractions in Libya. Curious - how do working Libyans ever visit a museum with their families? On arrival you have to leave any bags in a locked cupboard behind the desk but you can hang on to your camera. You will be handed over to one of the museum guides who will take you on a 90 minute tour. The place is so large that you will feel as if you are being rushed but don't despair, you will be left on the top floor and allowed to wonder about at your leisure afterwards. We spent a total of 4 hours there and would probably have stayed longer if it weren't for the fact that there wasn't even a cup of coffee to be had, let alone lunch. Some of the Greek and Roman mosaics, eg from the Villa Selene, are excellent, although the number of such pieces doesn't match the Bardo. There are 5 floors of treasures, something for everyone, even a natural history section and a hagiographic series of rooms devoted to Gaddafi. If you're not going to visit Saluntah (Slonta), make sure you see the copy of the temple with its carvings of faces, pigs and snakes.
