1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum, Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Excellent British V.I. Historical Museum

This museum is located in an old sugar processing plant which used to be located right on the shore. It is now located approximately 1 mile off the shore as the land area has since been filled to expand the shore. Museum contains a wide range of history for the BVI, including slavery, development, modernization, athletics, women, maritime, flora, fauna, fish, animals and more! There really is something for everyone who has any interest in learning about the history of the BVI. There are three separate rooms for browsing as well as a basement with some antique ship tools and instruments. In the main room when you first enter is a cotton machine that shows how the seeds were extracted and the cotton was pressed into 400 pound bales. This is just one of hundreds of interesting tools and artifacts from the past 150 years. Museum is conveniently located and is approximately a 20-25 minute walk from the shore.

SO WORTH IT : A must for History buffs
My daughter is a huge history buff. And I'm moderately interested. We got off the cruise ship and left the rest of the family to shop for trinkets. Got a taxi for $5/each to the Sugar Work Estate. We were greeted by the lovely Ermin Penn, (she usually is working at the Old Government House) local Virgin Island historian expert! What a tremendous pleasure to have her walk us through the small but telling Museum. This museum details the local history of the slavery, sugar, cotton and the land grab of the local government. Highly recommend

    Small, but interesting
If you are interested in the history of Tortola this museum is worth a visit. We were visiting the nearby J.R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens and a fellow cruise ship passenger recommended that we walk over to see the museum and we're glad that we found it. Admission was $5.U.S. each. The woman who was working there that day was a lovely person & very knowledgeable. It was not crowded & the building is a cool spot to get out of the sun. There is much to learn there and it was very interesting. We walked back to our cruise ship afterwards.
