Bhutan Postal Museum, Thimphu District, Bhutan

A hidden gem

This small postal museum is totally worth a visit. It has some quality displays that show this history of postal services in Bhutan and more importantly how they used stamps as one of the first and best ways to generate foreign currency. It kick started their international economy. Be sure to get the story. They keep this "leading edge" revenue generation going by letting you take a picture and instantly printing up stamps for you to use on postcards. This was not on our original itinerary, but Simon Winchester the writer, and part of our group, recommend a visit. It was a highlight of our 10 days in Bhutan.

    interesting postal museum
I enjoyed visiting this postal museum. I learn a lot! There are many displays of stamps and history here. Bhutan has been a leader in post related areas for decades - very impressive. I especially liked to read the history of the postal runners that used to carry letters and messages across the country and over mountain passes as fast as possible for centuries. (The adjacent stamp store needs to work on their customer service - not looking up from your cell phones or bothering to help a potential customer is not acceptable service especially if you want to deal with foreign guests to Bhutan.)

    Print your own stamps
The museum is not big and not very interesting. Most people go there because you can get your own stamps there. Either you can bring your own picture or you can take a picture there and after a view minutes you can take the stamps with you as a motive with you. Quite a nice idea!
