Trinity River Kayak Company, Texas, United States

4.5 (4 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Coppell Kayaking & Canoeing

Urban Kayaking

The Trinity River (specifically the Elm Fork), flowing through the heart of Dallas, is not particularly noted for its beauty. Unfortunately, due to fellow citizens STILL not properly disposing of their trash, much of it winds up in the river. So sad. However, on a recent Saturday, hubby and I decided to check out kayaking the Trinity with Trinity River Kayak Company. Very nice operation! Ultra clean and organized check-in shop with a nice selection of supplies, if needed. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly. Shuttled to our put-in site with some great background information about the river shared by Jeff. We did the Double Rush starting at Lake Lewisville Dam. (fyi: Six hour ride which requires pretty constant paddling). Lots of great bird viewing (bonus: Came upon an Egret rookery high atop a Cottonwood (I think)...about 15 nests each being guarded by a statuesque Egret. So incredible!). Most stretches of the river were quite lovely and lush. We did our part to help clean the river but picking up the rogue plastic bottle/styrofoam cup we came up which were floating mid-stream. A great way to spend a day in the city, while feeling very much out in nature.

Fun Group Kayaking in the City!
What comes to mind when you hear "Trinity River"? If you think of the Trinity near Downtown Dallas, you probably think of a dirty, polluted river. But put your assumptions behind you and head north to the Elm Fork of the Trinity in Coppell! While you won't find a pristine river, you will find am urban retreat that most D/FW residents aren't even aware of. Your adventure starts at the Carrollton dam where the Trinity crosses under Sandy Lake Road. You can reserve your single or tandem kayak online but a reservation aren't required. You save a few bucks on two people if you go with a tandem kayak. Personally, I preferred the independence of the solo kayak. I'm a tad competitive. The route takes a minimum of 2-3 hours and it's a distance of about 5 miles. You're heading downstream in a very calm current so paddling is required somewhat but there's lots of opportunity to just go with the river's flow. The staff will fit you with a life jacket and give you full directions for your pickup at the end of the path. At the end, they will load everything back up for the drive back to where you started and to recover your things. We came in a large group and we all had a really good time. The river is fairly murky but you won't be drinking the water so don't sweat it. Be prepared for a tiny bit of nature like cranes, small garden snakes, and turtles. If anything, it's an excellent workout and a great group activity.
