The Twisted Sisters, Texas, United States

4.5 (3 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #3 in Bandera County Scenic Drives

My new favorite roads

I heard about the Twisted Sisters and decided to take a run down there (I live in DFW, about 5.5 hours away). I have to say this route is incredible. For being back roads they are in great shape. Fast sweepers, sharp curves, elevation changes, sheer cliff faces... this route has it all. And has 100+ miles of it! Compare that to the world-famous Dragon's Tail which is 1/10th the size. The only downside is cell reception is gone most of the route so only the brave need apply. If you break down out there you might be waiting for someone to come upon you. For myself, I was there in my MX-5 which doesn't even have a spare tire...

Three Sisters, also known as the Twisted Sisters
Farm to Market (FM) 335, 336, 337, comprise what is known nationally as the Twisted Sisters. It is a series of connecting road networks perfect for motorcyclists and auto enthusiasts. Best Motorcycle Roads in America.com ranked the Twisted Sisters as the best motorcycle route in America. It is not/not for novices, rather experienced motorcyclists accustomed to windy, twisty, inclines, narrow roads. Prominent to the entrance to these roads are large signs noting how many have been killed riding these roads. Stunning beauty, rock walls, sharp curves, it doesn't get better than this unless you are riding the Devil's Backbone between Durango, Mexico & Mazatlán. Leakey is central to the route & has several places to fuel and grab a good meal. The Bent Rim Grill is likely the most popular but if you are in a hurry, grab a taco at San Juan's Taqueria. Bear's Market is well stocked as well as the local grocery store. Lodging is also available in Leakey. Another town along the route is Camp Wood but offerings are limited at best. Medina has a couple of great places to eat, Keese's BBQ likely the best. Bandera is also a must see in route to the Twisted Sisters, stop at Sid's BBQ for killer baby back ribs or the OST (Old Savannah Trail) for breakfast in the John Wayne room. Allow yourself at least six hours to take it all in. While you can ride the +160 mile loop in 3-4 hours, why rush? Finally, make time to visit the fabulous Lone Star Motorcycle Museum in Vanderpool, a gem of a place. A word of advice, "Keep the rubber side down."

the best fall drive/ride in Texas
Be ready to drive or ride. This is a long one. We aborted due to time at Leakey Texas. It was already 3:30 and it was shorter to go back then it was to complete the loop with darkness coming at 5:30. This is a motorcycle riders dream ride in Texas The twisted sisters are FM337, FM336, FM 335 a nearly 100 mile trip through the canyons and hills of central Texas. One road follows the Sabinal River one follows the Frio River and one follows the Nueces river and together with state route 41 complete the loop. What we saw was pretty good and we will tryt o complete next time we are out to this area.
