The Strand, Texas, United States
4.5 (3.095 reviews) Monday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #13 in Texas Gulf Coast Historic Walking Areas
We enjoyed walking around, shopping, eating, drinking.
The Strand is a charming historic district in Galveston, lined with ornate late 1800s buildings and filled with restaurants, art galleries, museums, shops, bars, and more. Here, you try some old-school candy at La King’s Confectionery, shop for souvenirs, visit the Pier 21 theater, take a horse-drawn carriage, or learn about history at the Railroad Museum. Explore the area on a segway tour, or uncover its dark side on a ghost tour. Plan your visit during Mardi Gras in February when The Strand is taken over with parades, music, and parties. – Tripadvisor

Historic Shopping and Dining Area
We found free parking along Market and Post Office Streets close to 20th St. however you could only park for a maximum of two hours. It was just a few minutes walk from the Strand. Do watch out for the curb heights to avoid damaging your car door as they were much higher than normal. What made the Strand stand out was the utilization of original buildings with current shops, art galleries and restaurants. For history buffs like me, the city installed markers and plaque In front of many of these building which helped provide context and and significance that many other shopping areas don’t have. Lots of outside dining and drinking so sidewalks were busy and added to the bustle as we wandered around the 5 blocks or so. If you don’t feel like walking there was a trolley and trolley like bus that cruised through the Strand for just $1 a ride?

Worth visiting
Lovely old fashioned fronted buildings all located on one street There are som touristy shops but despite this still some hidden independence gems We walked from our b&b so had no issue with parking We did want to take the trolley but it does operate in May! No idea why and what a loss as there were a lot of tourists around We loved the old ice cream parlour which is very busy. We loved the old fashioned sodas and how they are made and served A must visit to Galveston
