A Sensory Treat and a Taste of Ole' Texas

This is a place that you cannot pass up . If you've never been, it's hard to describe the mixture of businesses that show up for First Monday. It is a flea market, a bit of magic, unique stores, quirky bed and breakfasts and the most fun you can have on any weekend. There are staged gun fights, real Texas bands, a movie theatre that also has bingo. A shop that makes "Teddy Bears" called Mountain Critters. You've got to go . If you are shopper, you will be in Nirvana!

    Don't miss The Mountain
Canton Trade Days are great and huge and exhausting but don't miss the nearby retreat called The Mountain. Reason 1: While Canton (Trade Days and the town) seem to shut down at 5pm, The Mountain stores and restuarants stay open until 11pm Reason 2: The people are amazing. Like a small community that welcome all newcomers. Reason 3: The Pie Shop; seriously the best pies I've had in many years (Chess was my favorite but Coconut Cream, Apple & German Chocolate were very good). Reason 4: The Bed & Bath/Breakfasts. (particularly the Palm Cabanas for us) Now check closely whether it says Bed & Breakfast or Bed & Bath. Really good food at the restuarants (Fire Side is really good). Reason 5: The shops. Lots of great shops with everything from antiques to custom jewelery and clothes. And they are open late! Reason 6: The trolly that will take you from the base of the Mountain to Trade Days and the Civic Center every 20 minutes for only tips. Reason 7: Did I mention Palm Cabanas, the Pie Shop & Fire Side Grill?

    Disappointing!
Much has not recovered after the fire. We chose not to walk all the way up to the top because we could see what looked like quite a few buildings that are still not rebuilt. My husband wanted to go to the blacksmith that was always there and several told us he hadn't returned. We did hear the shootout but did not go and see it. The are several places with new decks and rails so they are trying to build it up again. We also talked to several people that said they were done after this year and also one in the grassy area who said he had been there for 40+ years. It's more fun in cooler weather to say the least and I do hope they rebuild for those who love to go. But many less vendors than before.
