Whipple Bridge in Clifton

It is the only operating Whipple Bridge left in Texas. This bridge will need repairs in order to be utilized before many more years. It is a one of a kind and great for learning about bridge making in the in the late 1870's.

    Nice old bridge
The Whipple truss bridge at Clifton is one of those dinosaurs from a bygone time that should be seen. 138 years ago the townsfolk needed a reliable way to get across the Bosque river so they built this bridge. That was during the time of horses, wagons, and steam trains, and and it is still doing It's job. Driving or riding across is nice, but walking on it is fantastic. Being on the truss bridge is unlike a concrete one, you can feel the "life" in it, the creaks and shutters as a car passes is unforgettable. Alas, the days are numbered for these holdovers, get out and experience it while you can.

Worth Seeing but the Wooden Planks Have Been Removed
The wooden planks are gone (no doubt the work of lawyers and political issues) but it's still a beautiful old bridge. My main beef is that they built the new bridge only feet away from the old bridge (budget ?). This is a landmark for Clifton so maybe someone will wise up one day and raise funds to return the wooden planks so the bridge cab be used for foot traffic and bicycles. This is a rare piece of history and deserves better treatment.
