Established in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, for over 300 years the former mission now known as the Alamo has been a crossroads of history. Having existed under six flags of independent nations and served as a garrison for five different armies, the Alamo has a rich history and a heritage to inspire Texans and people around the world. Although the Alamo is best known as the site of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, all 300 years of Alamo history are vital to our story. Visitors can take a guided battlefield tour, rent a self-guided audio tour, walk through the historic Alamo Church and Long Barrack Museum, listen to a history talk given by an Alamo Interpreter, participate in living history demonstrations, watch a documentary on the history of the Alamo, and much more. Admission to the Alamo is free, but there is a charge for guided and audio tours.

Great historic site; Pay for the audio tour; Highly recommended!
We prepaid for the self-guided audio tour at the Alamo which is totally worth it. We went on a Monday at 9:30am and with a 90% chance of rain that day, the place was not crowded at all. Because of the lack of people there was no monitoring of how long you could spend in the church so we got to enjoy it for as long as we wanted. Same with the exhibit hall. We were able to duck into buildings when it did rain. We spent about 2-3 hours there and learned lots especially from the audio tour. A must see when in San Antonio. Tip: Park at the city owned Houston Street parking garage for a max charge of $10 for the day; it felt safe and was near the river walk.

    Incredible
An incredible experience visiting the Alamo. You need to get reservations (free) to visit the main building and walk around the grounds. You can also purchase guided tours. There is also a seating area with a TV running the History Channel's production of the history of the Alamo, which is also no cost, I HIGHLY recommend if. Once inside the church/main building I felt the same overwhelming feeling I experienced when touring the grounds at Pearl Harbor, such hallowed grounds realizing the history of the place I was standing. Obviously this is a don't miss tour!
