Surprisingly Nice

The Taylor County History Center, previously the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, located in Buffalo Gap, Texas, tells the story of the last fifty years of the West Texas frontier. Through interactive exhibits, educational programming, and historic interpretation, guests experience the formative years when the region changed from the Wild West to civilized settlements. The iconic structure of the Village, the original Taylor County Courthouse, represents the presence of justice on the once untamed frontier. The collection includes over fifteen historic structures from the region and over 10,000 artifacts representing the material culture of West Texas.

a nice pioneer village to explore
We visited here on Dec. 28 as part of a road trip from our home in southeastern PA out to New Mexico; we combined it with a visit to “Frontier Texas!” in Abilene (see separate review) for a nice day’s outing. We spent about an hour exploring the pioneer village here, which was comprised of a dozen or so 19th century buildings filled with artifacts, period furnishings, and other exhibits. On the day we visited, every building was open for self-touring, and we enjoyed checking them out; one building contained a small art gallery with southwestern artwork. The woman who welcomed us to the site provided a helpful map for all there is to see here, which included a nice explanation of each building or feature here. All in all, an interesting place for history buffs to check out! There is free onsite parking and a reasonable admission charge (we had free admission through our NARM membership).

    Wonderful history museum
I love this museum. There are many buildings on the property and you can stroll thought them all and look at their wonderful collection of artifacts from homes, banks, schools, wagon barn, chapel and on and on. It is really inexpensive for the value you receive. This was my second visit and I loved it just as much. We also were joined by a big black cat who escorted us around the back of the property. Be sure to check for hours and days open.
