"World's smallest Catholic Church" - quite a history lesson

Traveling from College Station to San Antonio, we made a stop at St. Martins - "World's smallest Catholic Church". It is indeed small as there are only 20 pews holding twenty people. The church is open and accessible to all. Its history is fascinating. At one time St. Martins was a large church, but it was dismantled to build a needed school in nearby Fayetteville. With the remaining lumber the current church was constructed to watch over the cemetery. Then, much later, the school was dismantled and some of the original fixtures, including the bell were returned to the church. Mass is held once a month, and prayers are offered for the requests that visitors leave in the greeting log. Of course donations are requested for upkeep of the church and grounds - but they not need to be "small."

    Precious place
We stopped by this spot in the morning, so the heat of the day hadn’t hit yet. It was unique. There is no staff onsite so it’s self-guided. We liked the quietness of the space and appreciated the history. Cool spot for history buffs and those for whom Catholicism is important.

    Neat old church
If you are driving through the area, this is a great place to stop and appreciate the simple beauty of this small Catholic church. It is unstaffed, so you can explore the church and surrounding property and pretty countryside. Definitely worth a quick stop.
