Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary, Texas, United States

4.5 (46 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in High Island Nature & Wildlife Areas

Photographer's Dream Location for quantity

I visited the Bird Sanctuary in April of 2018, just wasn't available to choose from in the options below. I love photographing the shore birds, and have always tried to find a place to get more than a fleeting glimpse of the Spoonbills. At the Sanctuary there is no short supply of shorebirds, and many varieties, along with a alligator or two. This is a must for someone that likes to photograph shorebirds and cannot make it to St. Augustine, FL for their annual festival. The crowds were minimal and I was able to photograph there for several hours. I can't wait to make it back there again. The staff was very friendly and helpful answering any questions.

    Pure Enjoyment
Alligators, turtles, and birds oh MY! This place is fantastic. We enjoyed the entire experience. The walkovers were outstanding and the viewing points of the birds were out of this world. We came specifically to view the Spoonbills, and they were on full display. Absolutely beautiful. Plus we saw gators and a nesting turtle. Biggest tip - BUG SPRAY! Wear bug spray. Second tip - be quiet, and slow down. We are going back! Plus they do events here. One even had wine, check the Houston Autoban website for information. This place is 100% @A_wine_o approved. Cheers. Place pairs perfect with a rose - to match the rosetta spoonbills.

    improved experience
A lot has changed in four years. A welcome center that includes clean restrooms, and a boardwalk system that gives you a bird's eye-view of the woodland canopy and of the astonishing rookery. Can be crowded, especially on a weekend just after a cold front or storm (as today was). But very enjoyable.
