Charming volunteer-run museum with lots of local history
My wife and took a weekend off from San Antonio to celebrate our anniversary and mothers' day (though without kids). We stayed in Utopia and as a lover of history I decided we must visit this small museum. It was a wonderful experience. First of all, it is free, though please do leave a small donation in the front desk jar . Second, there are so many historical artifacts that I decided right away that our children (ages 4, 7, 10) would have loved it. The museum is all of two rooms, and I think a brief visit of 20 minutes is enough to see a few items of interest, though I am sure that for the person genuinely interested in local history they could easily spend an hour there. My favorite part was near the entrance, where a large map of the canyon is accompanied by a folder of notes regarding different historical incidents at different places on the map. My wife's favorite display was a number of historical children's toys from the canyon. But there were some other wonderful things: a venerable bathroom tub, an old set of encyclopedias, old type writers, clothing, furniture, and much more. Do yourself a favor while passing through Utopia, but remember that it is only open on the weekends.

Great spot to visit!
This little museum is almost easy to miss from the road. It is free but does ask for donations since it is run by volunteers. Lots of local history information and artifacts. I've been in and out of Utopia for over 20 years but had never gotten around to visiting the museum until one day when my husband and I had some extra time on our hands and stopped to visit. We ended up staying for about an hour in there reading all the tags and articles, looking at all the implements, tools, clothing, and other items presented. Enjoyed talking to the curator also. I do recommend it for history buffs to stop and take a look.
