The River that Shapes Big Bend
From Colorado mountains to the Gulf of Mexico sands, this river winds for nearly 2,000 miles, but in the West Texas area of Big Bend National it is probably its most beautiful and culturally and geologically significant. Here there are not only mountains, tremenous canyons and thirsty desert, there are also two nations that share and immensely scarce resource, water in a desert. We had the opportunity to experience it at two amazing canyons, Santa Elena and Boquillas, as well as along the incredibly scenic El Camino del Rio. It may be what made the Big Bend area the favorite part of our trip. We visited a lot of desert but no where other than here did the desert have water. If you are in the Big Bend area, be sure to take in the river that shapes it.

Lots of hiking
Plenty of places to hike but not many places to eat so take your own picnic. Many were using canoes along the Rio Grande but no swimmers. It was shallow when we were there and it's not very clean so not sure I'd swim in it. We did enjoy the scenery and the colorful cactus we saw.
