A Must Do Event!

A lovely day out driving in the rolling countryside and some very beautiful churches. The cost is reasonable, $12 per person and a tip for the guide which for our group was $5 each. Not sure if that is standard or based on group size but we had 14 people.

    Painted Churches Tour
Some things to note: If you get a tour guide, their fee is $60 total. If there are just two people or probably more, it's still $60 from what we understood. And then it's $22 a person for the tour. There are restrooms at each church in case that is important to you. Our tour guide was Reverend Andrew S. and he was very good and knowledgeable. We toured all 6 churches and since there were just two of us and Andrew it took about 3.5 hours. But if you go with a large group and see all 6 churches, it will take all day. Looking back now, we think we could have been fine seeing the 3 most ornate churches and skipping the rest. The last two churches on the 6 church tour were not ornate like the rest so they could be easily skipped and they aren't open to the public. You can tour the rest on your own but it was nice having a tour guide to tell us about each church and we would have had a hard time finding them on our own. You can get a tour guide and just see fewer churches but not sure what the difference would be in cost. You start the tour at the Chamber of Commerce and if this is important to you, they do have a restroom there also. If you do the longer tour with a large group, you break for lunch and then restart the tour. Since it was just the two of us, we were done in time for lunch. It is good to bring your own snacks and water on the tour.

    Fantastic
We scheduled a tour of the painted churches through the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce. Naomi greeted us at the chamber and was so very nice and helpful. So much so that I asked if I could take her photo. Terry was our docent/tour guide and she was fantastic. She is a retired Texas history and American history teacher, so it doesn’t get much better than that, but it did. Terry is also a longtime practicing Catholic (we are not Catholic), so she had a lot of additional insight into the practices and insights of the Catholic religion. You follow Terry in your own car. The drive alone from church to church is also part of the fun. We went to four churches. In Dubina, Praha, High Hill and Moravia. I could not pick a favorite. All were beautiful. Please, please, please take the tour through the chamber and ask for Terry. Going on your own, you may not be able to get inside the churches, and even if you luck out and get in, you will not get the incredible insight Terry gives.
