Hands on History

A must see for any Texas history, frontier, or Native American history enthusiast. Be sure to read "Empire of the Summer Moon" or similar frontier memoir prior to visiting, so you'll be able to fully appreciate the people and events that made this place famous. The fort has been rebuilt, but every attempt was made to make the current structure identical to the original. This is a very affordable stop, just a couple of dollars to enter and tour the fort. They host lots of events too, so be sure and check their calendar.

    Worth the trip
I had been by here a few years ago but it was closed on that particular day. My trip this time was great. The re-created fort was worth the time I spent there. But even more interesting was the visit I had with the people in the gift shop/museum where you enter. I had a great time talking with Sarah & Ron and would not have left until they kicked me out at closing, except that I had to get back home that evening for a dinner. They are both very knowledgeable about the real history and the fort & location. I knew the fort was a re-creation but had not ever read anywhere how much had been left for the CCC to rebuild it. They knew how it was determined to be at the correct spot, what condition it was in when the rebuilding was undertaken, and so much more. Sarah especially is very versed in the history of the Parkers and Anglins. It was fun comparing information with her. They also told me of other points of interest around the county and I cant wait to take another road trip to Limestone County

    nice historical site
We stopped by Fort Parker Historical Site on our way home. Although a bit out of the way it was worth it. Only 2 bucks to get in. There is a self-guided tour with signs and a short video. The place needs a little TLC as the poison ivy and Hummingbird vines are taking over the walls of the fort. Inside the cabins in the fort are depictions of how the people of the time lived with their bare number of possessions. I think a guided tour of the site would do it much more justice. It was a fun stop though.
