Permanent exhibit is only before 1920
The main part of the museum is a well done exhibition of Big Bend area history before 1920 (four signs about the days of Pancho Villa). The rest of the main part is older, mostly the 1800s. I was disappointed that it didn't tell me anything about the area today except two maps. There was a temporary exhibit of "modern" Western art, but it looked basically like older art: cattle and cowboys... not much clever or intriguing. There were also a few photographs.

Best Free Museum Around
We visited this museum after spending a week in Big Bend NP and the adjacent Big Bend Ranch State Park, and this museum added a lot of context to what we had seen. By comparison, the exhibits at the museums in Big Bend NP were extremely weak. The museum does a good job of briefly telling the geology, human history and natural history of the Big Bend region. Plan on 1 to 2 hours to enjoy all of the exhibits. The nice gift store is a bonus.
