The other Bastrop, away from the commercial part
Bastrop is one of a declining number of old Texas towns that is charming and traditional but has not been "kitsched" in the tacky way of Spring, "commercialized" in the depressing way of Kemah, or "designer bombed" in the unaffordable way of Fredericksburg. And thanks to the convenient but commercialized mass of chain restaurants, gas station supermarts, and big box retailers along the highway, the real Bastrop, just 3 blocks from the highway, has been left alone for people who are actually turned off by all that modern convenience and noise. I don't know how long it will last, but Main Street Bastrop still has its small town Texas character. There are also several good places to eat and hear live music, two of which are authentic and not corporate and overpriced... Those are Maxine's and The Grace Miller, of which I think the latter is better. If it's anytime near dinnertime, I recommend coming here to get out of your car on a quiet street and enjoy traditional Texas food, atmosphere and entertainment before getting back in your car and on to your destination.

Nice to walk through, interesting historic district
This is a cute historic district to walk through for awhile. While driving through the area, we stopped to eat and then walked around for about an hour. There are some interesting and unusual stores and a few restaurants. I read another review about the lost potential in the area and I have to agree. The area could be amazing with more stores and eateries. Parking was pretty easy, but we were there in the middle of the day on a Thursday.
