Nice except for all the trash!

Nice size lake in the middle of the desert. We camped at Balmorhea State Park, (which is awesome for a small park), and were looking forward to fishing at Lake Balmorhea. We started at the damn but it was way too windy so we drove around to the south side to find a calmer spot. We found an area with covered tables and decided to fish there. It was so trashed out - beer cans, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, broken glass, flip-flops, plastic bags, confetti (piñata?) and a bunch of other crap. The guys who dump the trash cans came by when we were there and took the cans but didn't bother to walk around a pick up the obvious trash laying around. Really sad.... This could be an amazing little lake area. We will not be returning. Had to get a day fishing license and pay $5 per person to fish here - $50 for 2 people to fish! Don't waste your time or money.

    Poor Maintenance
It seems after reading everyone’s reviews, before posting mine...that the people who run this business don’t care. We drove to the southern part of the lake to get away from the crowds and our vehicle got scratched up driving through the trails. Would be nice if they trimmed the brush around the trails!! Some of the trails where run down that the bottom of our vehicle was getting hit. Would be nice if they’d filled in the the pot holed trails!!! They get plenty of tourists and local visitors from around the areas, why not maintain it a bit?!? The least you could do for the people who come and pay into their visits.

    Missing a few things.....
Not maintained at all. When I think of camping this is not it. While I was prepared for the worst (thankfully) here is how it went. They charged me 25$ a night for full hook up on a RV. If you have your own generator its a little cheaper 20$. There are no public bathrooms or showers. There is no playground. The RV spots have no picnic tables or shade. Keep in mind you will be swimming with the cows and cows don't care where they use the bathroom. This could be a gem if there was some upkeep. The trails are over run with weeds, cactus, and whatever else grows in the wild. A truck that is lifted would be ideal anything smaller and you are entering at your own risk. The positive is they do have sewage, water, and electricity. Maybe think about setting up a shop for rentals of fishing poles, tubes, paddle boats, canoes, life jackets, john boats something. Sarah at the general store where you check in and pay was as sweet as could be. Very helpful. While supplies are short due to current circumstances it was enough to get by if you didn't bring your own stuff. They do not sell live worms at this time but did have some minnows. They also have firewood in bundles of 8 for 8$. All in all make sure you bring everything you need or you will be without unless you wanna make that drive into town.
