Judge Roy Bean Museum, Texas, United States

Worth a stop

When you are driving across Texas on highway 90, there isn't much to see, so any relief from the miles of nothing is welcome, but this particular museum was a pleasant surprise. I didn't expect much. Judge Roy Bean has been dead for some time now, so he might not be remembered by a lot of people coming through here. But it doesn't matter whether you know who he is or not. First, there is a person there eager to help with questions about the Judge, questions about travel in the area, with questions about the small, but beautiful desert garden they have. Nice to talk with. There is also a large collection of travel brochures available. Clean restrooms-more like immaculate restrooms. The Judge Roy Bean info is interesting and the desert garden is as well. You have to go about two miles off 90 to see this, but it is worth it, and once in Langtry, you can't miss it. It's the biggest thing in town. And it's free!

Do not miss the cactus garden!
This was a visit several years ago but very memorable. The museum was nicely done and the guides, as others have said, were helpful and knowledgeable about the Judge as well as other sites in the area. To me the star was the cactus garden. I never knew there were so many interesting, beautiful, unique plants that could grow in such inhospitable conditions. I am not a plant or flower person and avoid being outside in the heat but I wandered for over an hour through the curving paths finding even more amazing plants around every bend. The colors were lovely but the adaptability of the various plants was remarkable. The visit to Langtree Cactus Garden gave me a different perspective as we drove through Big Bend later.

You've seen the movie, now go see the site!
Paul Newman did not win an Oscar for his portrayal of Judge Roy Bean, but this museum which brings the judge to life is definitely worth a stop. The judge was a most interesting character and the buildings and museum do a good job of telling the true story of his life. Staff in the visitor is extremely friendly and knowledgeable not only about the judge, but about West Texas as well. We received good information which helped us plan our vacation for the next 10 days.
