Garden area with seating
Since you can not park close to the monument, it is nice to have a nice area to sit down. The monument is close to the corner of one busy busy road and a neighborhood street. There is a sidewalk and one of us used a walker with wheels. Slightly up hill but we made it. The Roman soldier statue seated in front of Mr Reagan once had a sword. The sword is over in the Museum of East Texas. I’m glad we went there first or we wouldn’t have known about the sword.

My wife's great-great-great uncle
When I did some research on John H Reagan I was amazed at how many things he accomplished during his life, he was a very busy man. There is a bust of him at the Palestine Library and a portrait in the Anderson County Courthouse. A Texas county is named for him, several high schools across the state, a state office building in Austin, and another statue on the university of Texas campus.

Historic Monument to one of Palestine's Famous Residents
Take a few minutes to enjoy this monument, not just a selfie stop. Picture yourself in this very spot during the time of our nation's civil war. Think about the decisions that needed to be made at the time and sacrifices made by all our countrymen. The John H Reagan Monument is at a commanding location above the local park.
