pleasantly surprised

Inner Space Cavern was discovered in 1963 by the Texas Highway Department. During construction of Interstate 35, they were required to do regulation core testing, which required them to drill into the ground. As they did this, they inadvertently drilled into the cave 8 times out of the 20 samples they took. Once they lost those 8 drill bits, they knew they hit a cave. They searched all over the surrounding area but could not find any access into the cave. So, they drilled a 2 foot wide hole down through 33.5 feet of limestone bedrock. The hole became known as the Discovery Hole as it was the very first entrance into the cave (and the only one for several months!). As they explored, they have found over five miles of cave, making Inner Space Cavern the fourth largest cavern in Texas!

Beautiful Cave Well Worth A Visit!
Our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 adult children) went on a small group Adventure Tour of the cave for our son's birthday. We live in the Georgetown area and have never taken the tour until now. Wow! It is a beautiful cave and well worth a visit! The Adventure Tour was a 1/2 mile hike in and and a 1/2 mile hike out. It wasn't strenuous, but there was a little bit of water dripping and pooling so wear tennis shoes. The formations are amazing and feature stalagmites, stalactites, and flows from thousands of years, along with sink holes, water, and an amazing story about how the cave was found. It was found in 1963 during the construction of Interstate 35. I'm sure they have many wonderful guides, and ours was Grant. He was a retired science teacher and was so passionate and knowledgeable about the cave, it's history, and formations, that we were truly impressed. He showed us how some rocks absorbed water, and others showed bone fragments with a black light. If you are in the area, I would highly recommend the Adventure Tour at Inner Space Cavern. There is also a Hidden Passages Tour (where you explore with a flashlight), and there is a Wild Cave Tour (where you crawl and climb into remote portions of the cave), but for a first time experience I would recommend the Adventure Tour. The tour is an hour to and hour and a quarter. Be sure to check the schedule for school groups, check the hours, and wear closed toe tennis shoes. They don't take reservations, but if you need to go at a specific time, check on a private group tour.

Inner Space Cavern - a very beautiful cave system, conveniently adjacent to IH-35
Inner Space Cavern is a no brainer...if you enjoy caves, then you should visit when in he area because it is so easy to access right adjacent to Interstate Highway 35. The tour will take approximately an hour and a half, and you will be rewarded with views of beautiful cave formations including stalagmites, stalactites, columns, flowstone, rimstone, helictites, and soda straws. A very nice cave indeed. The pathways are well maintained and easily traversed. The guided "Adventure" tour will cost about $20...well worth the money. Happy caving !!!
