Colorado river trip

Wanted to kayak the Colorado river in Columbus Texas. Found Howell canoe livery and had a blast. They rent all types of canoes and kayaks We had our own and they shuttled us for a nominal fee. The owners are pleasure to deal with friendly and polite. The trip was 6.1 miles and it took us about 3.5hour to complete we drifted half and paddled half. Found a sandy area and had a picnic. Saw many birds/ducks a couple deer and cattle. Quite drift along a beautiful river. The water was low but we never got stuck or had to walk. There are a couple light rapids that were fun. We are defiantly going to do it again hopefully when the water is just a bit higher we will bring some Freinds and let them rent a few kayaks/ canoes.

It's obvious that they love what they do
Over the years we have used many canoe services on many rivers, some small one man operations and some huge outfits with multiple busses. As of March my family and I have used the Howells' services four times. Frank treats everybody like his best friend and the kids love him. He is especially good with members of the group that might have some concerns... The equipment is always clean and in great condition. I'm sure we will be back multiple times this summer.

    Very atypical canoe livery
My wife and I have been to many canoe/kayak/raft rental places before. They are typically old, junky looking places with grunchy looking shuttle vehicles and equipment. However, when we arrived at Howell's we were pleasantly surprised by how well kept the place looked. When we walked inside the room was immaculate and well decorated. Could've eaten "off the floor." We were welcomed by Mrs. Howell who quickly and efficiently took care of all the paper work and gave us an overview of the trip as we waited for Mr. Howell to return from launching other customers. He then took us to the garage where the canoes/kayaks, life jackets, and paddles were very neatly arranged. Before selecting our equipment he gave us a map and satellite image tour of our route. He pointed out each area of the river and how we should navigate each part including very specific directions about where the takeout was. He then walked with us acoss their backyard and down some very well built concrete steps to a very well thought out concrete launching/boarding area. He held our tandem kayak for us and gave us tips on the best way to get in/on the kayak. The river was flowing at 12.7 which was a really good flow for floating the river. The only time we had to paddle hard was a small stretch that had us heading I to a12mph stiff breeze. The rest of the time we only had to paddle to stay in the current or to miss some of the very few snags. If you're looking for any "white" water this isn't the trip for you. But if just want a quiet, relaxed time on a river, I can't think of a better trip anywhere in Texas. And I know of NO other canoe livery as well-managed and as friendly as the Howell's. FYI - my wife and I are just under (her) and over (me) 70 years old. We had a great time. Can't wait to come back with some of our grandsons.
