Hood County Jail and Historical Museum, Texas, United States

Really Cool and the Kids Loved it too

The museum is housed in an authentic old western jail built in 1885 and located just off the northeast corner of the town square. The museum preserved the upstairs jail cells and hanging gallows just as they were when the County used it as a jail. The main floor houses exhibits on Hood County history covering David Crockett's descendants, General Granbury's tombstone, the Colony, Jesse James, John Wilkes Booth, Bell Starr, Comanche Peak, Barnard's Trading Post, the Brown family piano, and much more. It is recommended to call museum in advance.

    Nice museum
Nice inexpensive museum. Interesting history and knowledgeable staff. Some steep stairs so someone unable to climb stairs would not be able to see the cells although they could still see the museum items downstairs.

We Were Surprised by How Much We Enjoyed This Museum
My father and I were celebrating his birthday in the area and decided to see the Hood County Jail and Historical Museum based upon its stellar TripAdvisor reviews. To be honest, I thought this would be made enjoyable by small town hokeyness rather than any legitimate credibility. Boy was I wrong!! The curator(s) have done a great job of preserving and chronicling the jail and providing a glimpse into the history of Granbury itself. A really insightful stop; I'm glad we did it!!
