Great little museum

See the actual cannon marking Texas independence. Many interesting artifacts and a very knowledgeable museum director. New reflecting pool being built. Souvenirs are reasonably priced. They have just started an entrance fee of $5 per person.

    Great museum
My husband and I visited this museum in hopes of learning about the Come and Take It event in Gonzales. We did just that but learned so much more. This is a rather small museum but makes a huge impact on a Texans heart!

    where texas got it's start
Gonzales the first battle of Texas. Ever seen the Flag, Come and take it? That comes from Gonzales Texas. The Mexican government was unable to protect the settlers from Indians so gave the city of Gonzales a 6 lb cannon to aid in it's defense. When the Texians became restless for independence Santa Ana decided to retrieve the cannon but 18 men of Gonzales took the cannon across the river and placed above it the flag bearing the now common phrase "come and take it". The "old" eighteen were able to keep the cannon until more help arrived. A short battle ensued and the Mexicans withdrew leaving the Cannon in Texian hands. This is considered the Texas "Lexington"......the first shots of the revolution.
