George Mitchell Nature Preserve, Texas, United States

Hiking trail

Great hiking trail and there are good places to sit. There is a great deal amount of shade so it makes it bearable even on a hot late summer day. Bring bug spray because there mosquitoes are everywhere. Many plaques with information on plants along the trail route. Great bike trails as well!! We saw a lot of people on their bikes and even some ATVs off road.

It's the woods, breathe easy and don't be uptight
I live within walking distance to the preserve and go there almost daily, and I would just like to say that I have never experienced an aggressive dog, or an "inconsiderate" dog walker. It's the woods, dogs like the woods. People bike on the pedestrian trails quite often, I guess that is also inconsiderate. There are lots of small divergent trails to get lost on and areas where you can find yourself completely secluded if you choose to go off the main path. Anyway, it's a great place and I find all people and animals back there to be friendly, happy, and understanding and appreciative of nature.

    Decent Experience
I enjoyed a several mile hike at this preserve and had a positive experience, but there were a few challenges. On the positive side, the atmosphere was great. Heavily wooded, the trails have a lot of curves to provide a real feel of being close to nature even on a fairly busy day. It is also quite flat, so not incredibly strenuous. But there are constant exposed tree roots and it is very easy to trip, twist an ankle or stub a toe. There is also quite a bit of soft sand, so walkers should plan for it. I personally would give this a solid ‘B’ as a day walker who has experienced a lot of trails in many parts of the country.
