Frontera Audubon, Texas, United States

4.0 (37 reviews) Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent Ranking #3 in Weslaco Nature & Wildlife Areas

Always relaxing, inspiring, and something new to spot.

This is small, but has so much that it’s easy to forget that you’re not further out in nature. Some areas of the paths are so dense with native Sabal Palms, Montezuma Bald Cypress, and other native plants, that it gives a feeling of how the Valley must’ve appeared in times past. The Skaggs house, dating to the early 1920’s adds a beautiful historic component. If you live with a physical disability, there are benches frequently placed along the trails (none of which are long). Sitting for awhile, is almost a guarantee that you’ll spot some wildlife - including bird and butterfly species only found as far north as the Rio Grande Valley. Colorful dragonflies, and adorable lizards are seen on a sunny day. If you want both a learning experience, and to experience tranquility close to everything, this is a perfect place!

Gem in the middle of the city!
Acres of varied terrain with almost unbelievable variety of birds. Extensive trails leading through dense undergrowth, open woodland, and pond area. Our guide was superb and identified the birds by their songs prior to seeing them. He could sing the song if you gave him a name! Added at least a dozen to my life list after 40 years of birding. Very nice bookshop with gifts. Altogether delightful experience. Highly recommended. Not crowded after Winter Texan season when I went.

Common Quick Stop for Birders Birding the Valley : Green Kingfisher and Chachalaca
On an extensive spring birding trip to south Texas my husband and I included a stop at Frontera Audubon to twitch the Green King Fisher. Trails were well maintained flat and easy to walk. The map provided by the visitors center was easy to follow in this small, 15 acre, wooded site with ponds and nice shaded benches to sit. Bird feeders with viewing areas were scattered about the trails. And yes we did see the Green KingFisher hunting as well as two Chachalaca feeding under the bird feeders. We also saw Black and White warblers, Yellow Throated Warblers, Carolina Chickadees and a Tennessee Warbler.
