Frio Bat Flight Tours, Texas, United States

Unique entertaining and educational experience.

Amazing experience. I'd love to go back in late June or August when the young bats are flying with their mothers. I've wanted to go for years, but had not made the time. I was really missing out. The guide was very knowledgeable, the history was interesting, and of course, the bats inspired gasps from all who attended. When you arrive everyone will park outside the gate and wait for the guide. They will come open the gate, let everyone in, and close the gate. It's a two mile drive to the site and a short walk up a well paved hill to the cave. It's a working ranch, so if you're late, you can catch up, but make sure you open and then close the gate so the cows don't get out. I will go see this each and every time I'm in the area.

My Mom's favorite part of the trip!
Very cool experience. We had kids ranging from 3-13 and they all loved it. The guide was very knowledgeable and the history of the area was very interesting and goes a long way back. Once the bats started coming, it never stopped! Amazing to see. My Mom, who hates all things creepy/crawly kept talking about this the remainder of the trip. Was her favorite part. When you arrive, you just pull up to the gate and wait for a truck to lead everyone in to the designated parking area. We were a bit confused on what to do when we go there early and the gate was locked and no one was there. Best to wear athletic shoes as you have to walk up a hill and it's pretty dusty.

    So many bats!
Pretty amazing experience! Check the website for tour dates. It's not every day. We were lucky to be in the area on a Friday night and booked over the phone. They were expected to come out between 7:30 - 8 p.m., but the bats had a different schedule in mind that night. They started coming out around 8:30 p.m. It's expected to take several hours for them all to leave the cave. There are 10-12 million Mexican freetail bats! We stayed and watched until it was dark (about 45 minutes.) Take flashlights so you can find your way back safely to the car. When you arrive, you line up at the gate, the guide will open the gate, and the line of cars will follow to a parking area, about a 10-minute drive. You walk up a short road to the cave and stand (or sit on a rock.)Take a folding chair if you prefer. The guide gives you information about the bats and the cave while you wait. We really enjoyed it!
