Fort Phantom Hill, Texas, United States

4.5 (125 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Abilene Historic Sites

A look in the past

I had passed this Fort many times and chose to stop. It was a decision I will never forget. I was, and still am, absolutely mesmerized at the standing structures. While most of the vegetation was dried and desolate, except few spots of green, the inside of the commissary was mostly green and soft. Stunning all the way around!

Very interesting fort ruins and it is free
My husband and I went to Fort Phantom Hill on a Sunday afternoon. We shared the 20 acre fort area with another couple from the distance. Fort Phantom Hill was active from 1852 to 1853 and from 1856 to the 1890s. There were three original stone buildings; a powder magazine, a guardhouse and warehouse. Several original stone chimneys, some old foundations and water well still exist. A couple old wagons, a canon and covered informational pavilion (with restrooms) were on the premises as well. There were no park rangers or other personnel at the historic fort. As far as I could tell, the fort is open all of the time. We spent 20-30 minutes walking around the ruins on dirt paths and across small fields. The grass was cut short but we watched for snakes. We certainly enjoyed our self-tour and it is free.

    Good Stop
Site is unmanned and a little rougher than the others I have visited recently. Admission is free and there are restrooms in the parking area. Beautiful terrain and one can imagine what the original site looked like with a little imagination. Wouldn't go terribly out of the way for this one, but if nearby, worth a stop for sure.
