Doncha pass up Fort Concho

The post- Civil War Army gets few words in the history books but this West Texas gem illustrates it vividly. Active from 1867-89, Concho was an outpost for quelling the natives and, in terrific boredom and low morale, keeping a presence at the eastern edge of the Pecos Military District. Museum guide Sara is a talent.

    A Great History Stop
This was a pleasant surprise. The fort has been extensively re-constructed. There is an excellent museum at the visitor center. The medical exhibit, barracks exhitbit, and officer's quarters were very well done. We did not have time for the guided tour, but it appeared to be informative with a costumed guide.

    Best Preserved Fort
It is one of the best preserved frontier forts that we have visited. The 40 buildings were constructed of native limestone and 23 original buildings are still in use today. We visited the artillery room, large enlisted barracks, mess and kitchen, headquarters building, hospital and officers quarters. Each of the buildings has furnishings, artifacts and signage to see/read so you get a complete view of what life was like in each building.
